Helpful Tips For Saving Water

Category News

Extreme water costs as a result of punitive municipal tariffs, is the last thing anyone
wants to see on their bill. Besides the monetary cost, water is a precious resource
and it's in our best interest to manage it well.
Here are some helpful water saving tips for property owners and tenants alike:

 Water tanks: If you are able to, invest in water tanks to collect the run off
rain water from roofs. Utilising tank water will lessen the demand on the
city's water sources. Use tank water or run gutters strategically to fill
swimming pools.

 Leaks: regularly check all toilets and taps for leaks. An unchecked leak can
cause unnecessary costs. One way to check for a leaking toilet is to add a few
drops of food colouring into the cistern and should you see colour in the
toilet bowl during a non flushing state, that could be an indication of a leak.
 Grey water: collect grey water by using buckets in the shower, from the
bathtub, washing machine and kitchen sink. Then reuse this water elsewhere.
EG, to flush toilets, water the garden, wash the car etc. NOTE: do not use
harmful chemicals in the water should you reuse the grey water in the
garden.
 Cleaning: plug a basin filled with water instead of letting water run while
brushing teeth, washing hands and washing dishes. Turn the tap off while
soaping in the shower. Only use the washing machine when there is a full
load.
 Gardening: to keep watering to a minimum, cover soil with leaves and grass
cuttings. Remove weeds and plant drought resistant plants that do not
require excessive watering.
It's important to consult with your region's municipality to establish the level of
water restrictions implemented and to obtain further information on how to curb
water usage, for both the commercial and residential sectors.
